WMC Unspinning the Spin

shortened forms of words

while personal names are shortened as an expression of affection (Liz, Pat, Jack), shortening of names of groups usually indicates hostility: abo (for "Aborigine"), lib, libber, women's lib, fag (even more hostile than "faggot"), Yid, jap, nip, homo, lezzie, spic (from "Hispanic"). Marc Wolinsky and Kenneth Sherrill (Gays and the Military) note the further derogation of shortened words like "homo" that end in "-o": chico, dago, fatso, gringo, lesbo, oreo, psycho, sicko, wacko, weirdo, wino.
