journeyman

in the nontechnical sense, this word can be replaced by journey worker, journeyed/trained/trade/craft worker, trainee, beginner, assistant, helper, subordinate; average performer; skilled craftworker; journey level (adjective). Or, use a specific title, for example, iron worker. However, in labor law or in the trades, "journeyman" has certain specific and, so far, irreplaceable meanings. It may be possible in some such cases to use journeyman and journeywoman.
