assigned female at birth (AFAB) / assigned male at birth (AMAB)
use these terms rather than "biological female/male" or "born female/male." An attending physician or other health provider generally determines the baby's gender when it is born, based on body parts and sex chromosomes. Because in some cases these "determinations" have proved inaccurate, the individuals involved reject that they were "born" or "biologically" the gender assigned. See also cisgender, transgender.
