anti-Semitism

although Semites are members of any of the peoples who speak a Semitic language, including Jews, Arabs, Assyrians, and Phoenicians, "anti-Semitism" is used and understood to mean "Jew-hating." A much more innocuous-sounding term than "Jew-hating," "anti-Semitism" obscures its hatefulness. Spell out what's involved: "anti-Arab hostility" or "anti-Jew (or anti-Jewish) publications." See also anti-Arabism, Jew.
