Anglo

used as a generic synonym for "white," as it is in some parts of the U.S., "Anglo" is considered inaccurate (not all whites have an Anglo-Saxon heritage) and objectionable (those who have suffered from Anglo-Saxon oppression—the Irish, for example—do not appreciate being called Anglos). "Anglo" is slang for white non-Mexican Americans in the South and Southwest and for white non-Cubans in Miami. When combining terms, no hyphen is needed when the second term is lowercase ("Anglophone") but is needed when it is capitalized ("Anglo-Saxon"). See also Anglo-American.
