it's not easy to replace this compact, instantly comprehensible term, but its negative—and unmerited—reflection on the Chinese city should at least be acknowledged: English sailors were kidnapped (often after being drugged) to work the ships sailing to Shanghai. Possible alternatives might include impress, conscript, kidnap, abduct, commandeer, force, trick.
