prehistoric/early peoples/humans, prehumans, fossil humans. Prehistoric is imprecise; indicate a specific geologic period. Because history is defined as "a record of events," "prehistory" is correct because it refers not to a time before history as we commonly think of it, but to a time before recorded history.
