when possible, be specific about the ways you mean "poor" (low income, substandard housing, illiteracy, without medical insurance). Do not use as a noun ("the poor") and make sure it's not code for "black" or other minority groups. Avoid classist assumptions about poor families' values, lives, choices, and behavior.
