normal

referring to some people as "normal" makes everyone else "abnormal" or at least "not normal." Although there are some appropriates uses (for example, when referring to statistical human normalities), in general it is better replaced or circumvented: instead of "normal child," use "normally developing child" or "child with normal eyesight"; instead of "normal classroom," use "mainstream classroom"; the opposite of "persons with disabilities" is not "normal people" but "people without disabilities"; the opposite of gay men and lesbians is not "normal people" but "heterosexuals." "Abnormal" and "atypical" are equally suspect; which of us counts ourselves absolutely normal or typical? See also deviant, special.
