matron

warden, attendant, police officer, deputy sheriff, bailiff, guard, prison/jail/custodial guard, superintendent, supervisor, overseer; principal, chief, director, head, manager. In its narrow legal sense, "matron" must be used until a nonsexist legal term is developed. In the sense of a middle-aged woman, replace "matron" with words that more precisely describe the person. Note the wildly different status and meaning of the word pair "matron/patron."
