this is a (usually) warm and positive phrase that can be used as is. Other variants are equally useful: like father, like daughter; like mother, like daughter; like mother, like son. To convey the concept more sex-neutrally, consider: the acorn doesn't fall far from the tree, a chip off/of the old block, like parent like child.
