intersex person(s)
people born with sex chromosomes, external genitalia, or an internal reproductive system that is not clearly male or female are considered intersex. Parents and medical professionals have historically assigned intersex infants a sex and performed surgical operations to conform the infant's body to that assignment, but this practice is increasingly controversial as intersex adults and advocates continue to speak out against it. Germany officially recognizes three genders on its birth certificates: F, M, X. Intersexuality is also known as hermaphroditism; use the latter term only in scientific contexts. Note: while some people can have an intersex condition and also identify as transgender, the two should not be confused. Additionally, not all people whose external sex markers are not clearly male or female consider themselves intersex; make sure the person actually identifies themselves as intersex.
