honcho/head honcho

a honcho can be either sex (it comes from the Japanese meaning "group leader") although it has generally been used for men. The semi-facetious "honcha" is incorrect. If you want a more neutral-sounding alternative, consider big shot/boss/wheel/cheese, leader, boss, hotshot, person in charge.
