gird (up) one's loins

perceived as sexist because it is assumed to refer to men, this term comes from Proverbs 31:17 where the loins in question actually belong to a woman. If you want an alternative, use prepare, prepare for battle, buckle on one's armor, get the steam up, get in gear, batten down the hatches, grit one's teeth.
