fetus

this is the correct term for a developing mammal after the embryonic stage and before birth; in humans, the stage properly termed "fetal" begins at week 9. When discussing pregnancy and abortion, it is not appropriate to refer to a fetus as a baby. See also abortion, reproductive rights.
