WMC Unspinning the Spin

distaff side

the female line or maternal branch of a family tree is called the "distaff side" because spinning (the distaff was used in spinning) was considered women's work. The male line or paternal branch is called the "spear side" (a term that doesn't appear in most dictionaries) because fighting was considered men's work. You could also use female/male line, maternal/paternal branch/line of descent.
