from black + yuppie, this rather vague and outdated referred to young, black upwardly mobile urban professionals, mirroring the term for young, white urban professionals (yuppies/Yuppies) who prospered during the 1980s. The informal term comes with some negative spin ("Terrell is such a buppie") so use it only if you know what you're doing.
