brotherhood (pseudogeneric)
unity, unity among humans, humanity, world unity, compassion, peace, companionship, goodwill, amity, friendship, comradeship, camaraderie, esprit de corps, conviviality; family, the human family, kinship, shared/human kinship; community, society, association, organization, social organization, common-interest group, club, corporation, federation, union, group, partnership, society; brotherhood and sisterhood. Protecting "brotherhood" from pseudogeneric use allows it to retain its strong original meaning; the word has been gaining new use as men find that other men can sometimes best understand, discuss, and reflect common joys and problems ("brotherhood" thus developing along the same lines that "sisterhood" developed as a description of a meaningful sex-specific bond). "Brotherhood" has been used since 1340 as a synonym for "guild" so we still see today, for example, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. But another group calls itself the United Electrical Workers and "solidarity" is also useful in this context (for example, the Newspaper Union Solidarity Committee).
