belle/belle of the ball
charming/popular/attractive person, flirt, center of attention, success, stunner, head-turner. The language never had a "beau of the ball," nor are many men described in "belle"-type terms—probably because women's successes have always been closely identified with the way they look and how they "behave" while men's successes correlate with what they have done and how they "perform."
