bedridden

bedridden, "bedfast," and "confined to bed" are more than simple descriptions; they imply "poor you!" Without euphemizing the situation, reword the sentence or use a less tragic-sounding (although perhaps less-than-ideal) alternative: "on bedrest, permanent/temporary bedrest," "flat on one's back," "laid up"; "needs to stay in bed for six months;" "is now on total bedrest."
