WMC Unspinning the Spin

statesman

diplomat, world/government/political leader, politician, legislator, lawmaker, public figure, political/government strategist, public servant/official; stateswoman and statesman. Avoid "statesperson"—it's not only awkward, but so far it's been used only for women. Replace "elder statesman" with more descriptive phrases: presidential adviser, well-respected world political figure, renowned political elder, longtime political resource.
