Women’s Media Center 2022 Report Gender & Non-Acting Primetime Emmy Nominations - Full Report

2022 EMMYS REPORT COVER

Television is an industry where “gender parity” in non-acting jobs is often discussed but rarely achieved. And when it comes to the Primetime Emmy Awards, the total numbers of women who get nominations in non-acting categories have continued to stall at below 40%every year. For the 2022 Primetime Emmy Awards, 33% of the non-acting nominees are women. This is barely an increase from last year, when women were 32% of the non-acting nominees for the 2021 Primetime Emmy Awards.

The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (or Television Academy), which over sees and produces the Primetime Emmy Awards, put its own spin on the 2022 Primetime Emmy Award nominations. In a press release about the nominations, the Television Academy stated: “It was a year of notable achievement for women.” Although the editing category had a 10percentage-point increase for women nominees (women are 35% of the editing nominees in2022, compared to 25% in 2021), overall numbers in all of the other non-acting fields showed decreases or very small gains.

Of the 2,357 people nominated for the 2022Primetime Emmy Awards in the 93 non-acting categories, 784 (33%) are women, 1,572 (67%)are men, and one (less than 1%) is a nonbinary person. For the 2021 Primetime Awards, of the2,337 people who were nominated for non-acting categories, 757 (32%) were women, and 1,580(68%) were men. With those nominee numbers stacked against women, it’s a foregone statistical conclusion that men will continue to dominate the total number of winners in these categories for the 74th annual Primetime Emmy Awards.

The 2022 Primetime Emmy Awards will air on September 12 on NBC, with Peacock offering livestream access on demand. The 2022 Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be presented over two days, during Emmys.com webcasts on September 3 and September 4. FXX will televise a Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony highlights special on September 10. All ceremonies will take place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
