We At The Women’s Media Center Stand In Solidarity With The Women of Iran
The Women’s Media Center congratulates the brave, imprisoned feminist Iranian activist, Narges Mohammadi, on winning the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her work for women’s rights. Today, our thoughts are also with the family of another woman in Iran, Armita Gervand, a teenage girl who was severely assaulted (and as of recent reports, in a coma), caused by Iranian officials, the so-called 'morality police,' who brutally punished her for not wearing a hijab in public. A year ago, another girl in Iran, Mahsa Jina Amini, was murdered, three days after she was detained by the so-called ‘morality police’ for an alleged violation of the country’s harsh strictures on women’s clothing. We are outraged at this government sanctioned violence against women and girls. We repeat our co-founder, Gloria Steinem’s, declaration of last year, “The Women’s Media Center calls on women everywhere to move in solidarity with Iranian women, and with this Women’s Revolution, and with the men supporting these women. Use whatever social media you frequent: Facebook, Tik Tok, Instagram, and even Twitter, to get this story out, because it continues. And we share WMC Co-Founder, Robin Morgan’s, warning that “Our own country’s flirtation with theocracy should learn from Iran. You can change the gods, since it’s not about them--it’s about power and control. And it always starts with women. So we fight together the same battle, for bodily integrity, for each other, for ourselves, for Women. Life. Freedom.”
