Shannon is currently a visiting scholar at the Institute for Middle East Studies (IMES) at the George Washington University (GWU). Shannon specializes in the 20th century history of U.S. foreign relations. Her research focuses on U.S. relations with Iran, the Islamic world, women’s human rights, transnational history, and international relations. Her other publications include book chapters and journal articles on U.S.-Iran relations, President Harry Truman and the Middle East, the international movement to end female genital mutilation (FGM), U.S. encounters with Saudi gender relations during the first Gulf War, and state of the field essays. A federal judge has put Texas to trial on whether there should be a timeline for the state to install air conditioning across its entire prison system. Rising temperatures have led to the deaths of over a dozen inmates. To discuss, we FEATURE MiAngel Cody. As a lawyer, Cody is nationally recognized for her dedicated defense of men and women sentenced to life in federal prison. She has defended hundreds of people in federal court and won freedom for 40 prisoners sentenced to life in prison for drugs. As a writer and producer, Cody curates stories that expose the trauma and survivorship of those trapped in America’s criminal courts. Cody has seen incarcerated fathers and mothers kiss children goodbye. She’s watched judges lament that mandatory sentencing laws left them hamstrung with no discretion. She’s seen people leave prison with no ID card, no home, no medicine, no methadone, no health insurance, no bus card, no education & no job prospects. She has stood with many people as they were sent into cages. And she’s received desperate calls when those same people returned from prison with nothing.
