Bio:
Jasmine Heyward is a writer, researcher, and visual storyteller with the Re-Scripting Gender, Work, Family, and Care initiative at New America’s Better Life Lab. Inspired by an adolescence immersed in Web 2.0 fan culture, their research explores media representation of stress, mental illness, family dynamics, and marginalized communities, and the impact of this work on audiences. For a decade, they have researched the depictions of these themes in entertainment media, from television to story-based video games, and they also advocate for thoughtful, accurate, and trauma-informed nonfiction storytelling co-created with marginalized communities.
The acclaimed film offers a vision of women characters whose strength is rooted in textured humanity.
