Why we marched for our lives

I doubt that even years from now our world will be perfect, that all issues of violence will be solved. But I know I will no longer sit idly by when mass shootings kill kids. I will be able to look back and say that I did something.

Today there's a national school walkout. Maybe this time will be different.

The teen victims of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting quickly coalesced into a movement: They used the hashtag #NeverAgain to share their experiences on Twitter and made their message clear to mainstream media, too.

Why the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School teen activists are so important

The February 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School may be the tragic event that finally leads to the change this country needs to finally address gun control.

A Girl's Guide to Joining the Resistance

The fight against injustice will always be long and often discouraging. The only way to persist is to choose a cause you feel that your life—and the lives of others—depends on, one you can speak to from (for lack of a better, less cheesy phrase) the heart.

An important, bipartisan bill is taking on sexual harassment

The Ending Forced Arbitration of Sexual Harassment Act aims to eliminate corporate policies that allow companies to silence victims of sexual harassment in the workplace.

Who is harmed most by Bronx fires

The one thing that characterized my childhood in the Bronx has been fire. Growing up there, it was clear that the borough hadn’t been, wasn’t, and perhaps never will be a priority for New York City officials.

How whistleblower and trans activist Chelsea Manning is moving forward

Since her release earlier this year, Manning has been speaking about issues like gender identity and surveillance in the press and at colleges and universities. On November 15, I had the chance to see her speak at Wesleyan University.

What white women’s votes for Roy Moore mean

Despite the accusations of sexual assault and molestation made against Alabama Republican candidate for U.S. Senate Roy Moore, as well as the racist and anti-semitic comments he made — like his claim that America was great during slavery — nearly two-thirds of white women voted for him.

What it took to get record youth voter turnout in Virginia this year

This year in Virginia, we had a slate of really compelling, diverse, young candidates who were more representative of Virginians than I think the usual slates of candidates are. We were excited about helping get them elected.

Our reproductive rights dodged a bullet with the Graham-Cassidy Bill’s defeat

While frustrating and dangerous, these constant attacks on women’s bodily autonomy provide all the more reason to support facilities like Planned Parenthood.

Trump’s pardoning of Arpaio redefines 'justice' in America

Joe Arpaio, according to Trump, was the one cheated and attacked by the criminal justice system — not his victims.

Building empathy and understanding in the age of Trump

How can we be less insulated? There isn’t a simple answer to this question, but it’s clear that in order to truly understand and recognize each other, we must want to understand and recognize each other.

We can't ignore Trump's sexist treatment of female reporters

From his comments about “pussy grabbing” to the restrictive reproductive policies he pushes to the lack of women on his staff, it’s understandable why so many women are uncomfortable with and resistant to President Trump. And Trump’s misogyny only continues: Caitriona Perry, an RTE News Washington Correspondent, was the latest woman to endure an upsetting interaction with the president...

The Manchester Bombing Was An Act Of Terrorizing Girlhood

I didn’t grow up in a very religious home. Concerts are where I know to worship. Joy, to me, in its most potent form, feels like expelling lyrics loudly at a stage. It feels like the rattle of drums in my bones. At concerts, I learned to find communion with strangers. I learned to be grateful for the sorrow and scars and coming of age from which great music is born. The performers are more preachers than deities, though we meet them with godly reverence. When we’re lucky, the artist is a young woman.

What Does #FreeMelania Really Mean?

By now, you have probably seen the infamous clip of Trump and Melania on Inauguration Day. To recap for those who haven’t, the footage shows Trump turning to Melania, who is courtly, beaming. As soon as Trump turns his back, her smile turns swiftly into what can only be described as a grave scowl.

Bridging The Divide

I dressed up as Donald Trump for Halloween in 2015. My costume was inspired by my disbelief that a “sexy Donald Trump” costume was being sold on the Internet. Instead of supporting the company that had (seemingly earnestly) created that costume, I decided to parody the idea by making my own.
