Women’s Media Center Launches WMC Talks Instagram Live Series
WASHINGTON, DC – The Women’s Media Center is launching its first Instagram Live series – WMC Talks. Hosted by Women’s Media Center Board Members Soraya Chemaly and Erica González Martínez, WMC Talks will tackle issues of the day through a gender lens. Offering trusted perspectives, WMC Talks will analyze the news to expose the everyday impacts of current events and public policies.
WMC Talks will live stream on Instagram bimonthly on Wednesdays at 12.30 EST. Chemaly and González Martínez will launch the show on January 14. Each subsequent episode will feature one of the two hosts and a guest chosen to highlight an issue of particular importance to women.
Julie Burton, President and CEO of the Women’s Media Center, stated “WMC Talks is a platform for conversations and community by, and about women at a time of unprecedented economic, political, and social disruption. We invite you to join us.”
Soraya Chemaly is an award-winning author and activist. As a cultural critic, she writes and speaks frequently about gender norms, social justice, free speech, sexualized violence, politics, and technology. She is co-founder of the Women’s Media Center Speech Project and has long been committed to expanding women’s civic and political participation.
“It’s often the case that media coverage erases diverse perspectives on the news,” explains Chemaly. “We are launching this talk series to share these perspectives and explain the importance, particularly in today’s media and political environment, of having a deep, critical, and intersectional lens when considering what’s happening in the world and how it affects us all.”
Erica González Martínez is a lifelong advocate for social justice and Latino issues, with expertise in news media, government communications and digital engagement. She is the Vice Chair of the Board of the Women’s Media Center and the Founding Editor of the IDAR/E journalism channel at the WMC, which is available in English and Spanish. She currently serves as the Director of Power 4 Puerto Rico, a national coalition of organizations working to clear hurdles in the way of the Island’s ability to become more self-sufficient.
“WMC Talks will dive into how women are experiencing rapidly changing policies and lift up the insight of women experts the public doesn’t have the benefit of hearing from enough,” González Martínez said. “With media cutbacks shrinking news and information gathering, WMC Talks will be an important resource for clarity and solutions during these urgent times.”
The first WMC Talks guest will be Maria Teresa Kumar, President and CEO of Voto Latino. She will discuss 'The Invisible Latina Narrative' with González Martínez on Wednesday January 28, at 12.30pm EST.
