WMC About
WMC Research and Reports

One of the first steps to changing the culture is to recognize the problem. The Women’s Media Center’s research and reports shed a light on the underrepresentation and misrepresentation of women in the media.

Our “Divided” research offers a snapshot of gender participation across all platforms. WMC’s “Status of Women in Media Report” consists of an avalanche of studies and reports examining the representation of women in newspapers, online-only news sites, television, radio, social media, video games and film. It is the industry standard on where women stand and serves as a map to where women need to go.

WMC investigations explore a myriad of topics, including reproductive rights, campus rape and sexual assault, women in politics, and the Academy and Emmy awards.

WMC News & Features

The Women's Media Center produces original articles—reports and commentaries—on important issues by a diverse group of women journalists and experts. Our News & Features articles provide progressive women's perspectives on both headline stories and events and trends ignored or misrepresented in the mainstream media, including feminist analysis of news events; stories that examine the media’s treatment of women; stories about women in the media industry; and coverage of issues of concern to women in areas such as economic justice, racial justice, politics, human and civil rights, reproductive rights, women in media, and women as leaders.

WMC About
WMC Women Under Siege

WMC Women Under Siege shows how sexualized and other violence is being used to devastate women and tear apart communities around the world, conflict by conflict, from the Holocaust to Burma. It is the only journalism project of its kind dedicated to this subject in a complex way. We keep these stories in the headlines for the public and policy makers, for educators and students.

Our conflict page has an ever-growing list of analyses looking at where women’s bodies have been weaponized in war. Our crowd-sourced map of sexualized violence in Syria, made in conjunction with Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, was the first such map to live-track rape in an ongoing war.

With this project, the Women’s Media Center is sending a message to the press, and to the world, that we can make the unspeakable visible and comprehensible, and in doing so begin to bring about an end to the global epidemic of violence against women.

WMC About
WMC Speech Project

The WMC Speech Project is dedicated to expanding women’s freedom of expression and curbing online harassment and abuse. We work closely with civil society advocates, technology companies, researchers, academics, lawmakers and activists to raise media awareness about what online harassment is and what its costs to women’s civic and political participation are. The internet, a transformative space for girls and women, allows us to transcend national boundaries and obstacles to our equality. However, the qualities that make the internet a revolutionary space also enable powerful variations on old themes: violence against women and the cultural policing of girls and women. Our goal is to increase understanding of the nature, scope and costs of online misogyny and abuse in order to contribute to new frameworks that will ensure that free speech is a right that extends equally to all. We are committed to the creation of a robust and safe public commons that will expand our freedom of expression and engagement in the public sphere instead of limiting it.

WMC About
WMC Training

The Women’s Media Center (WMC) media training and leadership programs seek to elevate women’s voices through media training. By training women leaders and experts to be media-ready and promoting them to reporters and media outlets, we change the face of media.

Women in media are often viewed as ornaments, not instruments. Through the Women’s Media Center training programs, our experts are prepared for all media platforms to raise important issues, be role models, expand the talent pool of commentators, analysts, reporters, writers, and to be promoted through our WMC SheSource database of experts.

WMC programs provide customized message development and media training to help women understand the media landscape and leverage media opportunities, own their expertise, know the critical elements of an interview, effective writing and pitching of op-eds, persuasively shape their media messages, build sound bites, learn on-camera techniques and personal presentation skills.
