In order to address the current refugee crisis, the UN General Assembly has approved the New York Declaration on Migrants and Refugees. To discuss how this plan would impact the lives of refugees, we SPOTLIGHT Kathleen Newland. Kathleen is co-founder of the Migration Policy Institute and directs MPI's programs on migrants, migration, and development and comprehensive protection for refugees and internally displaced people. Her work focuses on the relationship between migration and development, governance of international migration, and refugee protection. Previously, Ms. Newland worked as an independent consultant for such clients as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the World Bank, and the office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations. She is currently an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of North Florida. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Florida. As a black woman and sociologist, Dr. Wilder is very passionate about connecting sociology to the everyday issues occurring within our society. She writes, researches, and lectures on the contemporary experience of black Americans and other racial/ethnic minorities. To discuss the rise of the far-right across Europe, we FEATURE Terri Givens. Terri is a Professor at the University of Texas at Austin. She earned her bachelor’s degree in international relations from Stanford University and her doctoral degree in political science from the University of California at Los Angeles. As a scholar, she focuses on the global politics of immigration, European politics, international relations and party politics. Her publications include Voting Radical Right in Western Europe, Immigration Policy and Security and Legislating Equality: The Politics of Antidiscrimination Policy in Europe.
