Ms. Al-Suwaij is the co-founder and executive director of the American Islamic Congress, a post-September 11th social activist organization based in Cambridge, Massachusetts that works to foster tolerance, promote civil society and civil rights, and mobilize a moderate voice in the American Muslim community. After fleeing Iraq following the 1991 uprising against Saddam Hussein (in which she participated), she worked as a refugee case manager for Interfaith Refugee Ministry. Carah works in the Governing America in a Global Era (GAGE) program and is a PhD candidate studying American political development, foreign and national security policy in the Woodrow Wilson Department of Politics at the University of Virginia. Tokyo has elected it's first female governor, Yuriko Koike. For further discussion, we FEATURE Yuki Tatsumi. Tatsumi was appointed senior associate of the East Asia program at the Stimson Center in September 2008 after serving as a research fellow since 2004. Before joining Stimson, Tatsumi worked as a research associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and as the special assistant for political affairs at the Embassy of Japan in Washington. Tatsumi has authored and co-authored many publications about Japan. A native of Tokyo, Tatsumi holds a B.A. in liberal arts from the International Christian University in Tokyo, Japan and an M.A. in international economics and Asian studies from the Paul H.
