The Women's Media Center released an investigation that showed that fewer women were nominated in non-acting categories this year, though there was a rise in nominations for people of color. To discuss, we FEATURE Nancy Wang Yuen, Ph.D. Nancy is a sociology professor at Biola University. Her book, Reel Inequality: Hollywood Actors and Racism (2016, Rutgers University Press), examines the barriers actors of color face in Hollywood and how they creatively challenge stereotypes. She is a sought-after expert on race and media by news outlets such as the Associated Press and the New Republic and has appeared in Buzzfeed videos, documentaries and radio/podcast shows. Rabbi Brous is the founding rabbi of IKAR, a vibrant Jewish Spiritual Community in Los Angeles dedicated to the integration of spiritual and religious practice and the pursuit of social justice. She was included in the Forward's annual list of the 50 most influential members of the American Jewish community for three years in a row, and was recently noted in Newsweek as one of the leading rabbis in the country. In 2008, she was the inaugural recipient of the Jewish Community Foundation's Inspired Leadership Award, recognizing inspired leadership, vision and impact in the Los Angeles Jewish community. Conservative writer Milo Yiannopoulos, who is often associated with the 'alt-right' movement, has been dropped from a US conservative conference and his book deal with Simon & Schuster has been cancelled after comments about paedophilia. To discuss, we FEATURE Kelly J. Baker. Kelly is the editor of Women in Higher Education (WIHE). Before taking over as editor of WIHE this year, Kelly was a freelance writer who covered religion, higher education, racism, gender, contingent labor, and popular culture for the past three years. She’s been researching and writing about white supremacy, white nationalism, racism, and religious intolerance for over 11 years. Her award-winning book, Gospel According to the Klan: The KKK’s Appeal to Protestant America, 1915-1930 (University Press of Kansas, 2011), is the first to analyze the white religious nationalism of the 1920s Klan and the continued legacy of their particular form of white nationalism today. A former employee with Uber has come out with sexual harassment claims against her manager. To discuss, we FEATURE Sara Baker. Sara is a writer and consultant who works for the Association for Progressive Communications as the global coordinator of Take Back the Tech!, a collaborative campaign to encourage women to use technology to counter gender-based violence. Under her coordination, Take Back the Tech! received a Bobs People's Choice Award for Best Online Activism in English, the inaugural GEM-TECH Award from the International Telecommunications Union and UN Women for Efforts to Reduce Threats Online and Building Women's Confidence and Security in the Use of ICTs, and a Prix Ars Honorary Mention for Digital Communities. She has written and been interviewed for US and international media outlets such as the Washington Post, Time, and the Guardian on the role of technology in both enabling and preventing violence against women.
