Experts on Iraq, IMF on US Minimum Wage, Midterm Elections, Gas Supply & Supermarket Slave Trade
This week we feature experts who can discuss the deteriorating situation on the ground in Iraq, the IMF's call for the US to raise its minimum wage, the Tea Party and the midterm elections, Russia's decision to cut off Ukraine's gas supply, and slave ships linked to the global shrimp supply chain.
As the situation on the ground in Iraq deteriorates and the US considers its involvement, we SPOTLIGHT on-the-ground Iraq expert Jane Arraf. Currently based in Baghdad reporting for Al Jazeera America and the Christian Science Monitor, she was CNN's Baghdad bureau chief and senior Baghdad correspondent between 1998 and 2005. In the late 1990s she was the only Western correspondent permanently based in Iraq. Arraf was the 2005-2006 Edward R. Murrow Press Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York and later a senior adjunct fellow. She has also reported extensively for NBC News, and her work has appeared in magazines and on NPR's "All Things Considered."
With Gazprom, the Russian energy giant, cutting off gas to Ukraine and potentially affecting the supply to other parts of Europe, we FEATURE gas and energy expert Marcela Donadio. Donadio has extensive experience conducting audits for global energy companies, particularly those involved in exploration and production, transmission, and trading. Donadio also works with many audit clients subject to regulatory accounting – specifically regulated pipelines in connection with FERC filings.
In its annual review of the U.S. economy, the International Monetary Fund called on the United States to raise its minimum wage because it was low by both historical and international standards. We FEATURE labor market economist Heidi Shierholz to discuss this recommendation. An economist at the Economic Policy Institute, Sheirholz has researched, written, and spoken widely on the economy and economic policy, particularly as it affects middle- and low-income families in regards to employment, unemployment, labor force participation, and wage, income and wealth inequality. She is a frequent contributor to broadcast and radio news outlets, including ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and NPR, and is regularly quoted in print and online media outlets.
As primary results for the 2014 midterms continue to roll in and to surprise election watchers throughout the country, we FEATURE veteran political strategist and analyst Donna Brazile. Brazile is also a syndicated columnist and television political commentator, Vice Chair of Voter Registration and Participation at the Democratic National Committee and former interim National Chair of the Democratic National Committee. A frequent contributor and political commentator on CNN’s “Inside Politics” and “Crossfire,” Brazile is also a columnist for Roll Call Newspaper and a contributing writer for Ms. Magazine. Brazile is the best selling author of “Cooking with Grease: Stirring the Pots in American Politics.”
