International tradewill be different under the new presidency with President Trump pulling out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership and moving to renegotiate NAFTA. To dsicuss, we SPOTLIGHT Seema Gahlaut. Seema is a Senior Research Associate at the Center for International Trade & Security. She is a member of the Export Control Experts Group in the WMD Working Group of the Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia Pacific (CSCAP). She directs all CITS programs aimed at assisting government officials, legislators, industry and the academia on issues relating to implementation and enforcement of controls over WMD-relevant technologies. This includes the Security and Strategic Trade Management Academy, Asian Fellows Program, and Enterprise Outreach Workshops around the world. With the anniversary of Roe v Wade this past weekend and President Trump reinstating the Mexico City abortion rule, which prevents foreign NGOs from offering abortions, we FEATURE Françoise Girard. Françoise is President of the International Women's Health Coalition (IWHC) and a leading expert on women’s health, human rights, sexuality, and HIV and AIDS. She is regularly consulted by governments and UN agencies and has played a key advocacy role during international negotiations, including most recently on the Post-2015 Development Agenda (Sustainable Development Goals). She collaborates closely with women’s groups in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to advance national policies on issues such as preventing child, early, and forced marriage, promoting comprehensive sexuality education, and ensuring access to safe and legal abortion. Syria peace talks have begin in Astana, Kazakhstan, and we FEATURE Mouna Ghanem. Mouna is the Coordinator of the Syrian Women’s Forum for Peace. She is also Vice- President of the Syrian political movement Building the Syrian State. A senior gender advisor with extensive experience in the Arab region, Mouna worked for more than a decade as the Deputy Representative for UNFPA in Syria and chaired the Syrian Commission for Family Affairs. She also served as the Regional Director for the United Nation Fund for Women (UNIFEM) in Jordan, Amman and as Deputy Chairperson for the United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW). With Kellyanne Conway declaring that the White House offered "alternative facts" during a press conference about President Trump's inauguration, we FEATURE Lisa Graves to discuss the role of the press under the new administration. Lisa is the Executive Director of the Center for Media and Democracy and has served as a senior advisor in all three branches of the federal government and other posts. She has also worked as a leading strategist on civil liberties advocacy in the area of national security and as an adjunct law professor at one of the top law schools in the country. Graves has testified as an expert witness on national security/homeland security and transparency issues before both the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives. In light of the Women's March this past Saturday, we FEATURE Celina Su. Celina is Marilyn J. Gittell Chair in Urban Studies and an Associate Professor of Political Science at the City University of New York. Her research concerns civil society and social policy, especially health and education. Her work focuses on how everyday citizens engage in and shape policy-making and community development—via deliberative democracy, community organizations, and protest and social movements.
