Fountain is a grassroots organizer and advocate in Birmingham, Alabama dedicated to Reproductive Justice, direct aid, and equitable services for marginalized people. Fountain—a mom herself— is the founder of Margins: Women Helping Black Women, a local community aid organization that addresses the reproductive, financial, and material needs of low-income Black mothers, TGNC parents, and their children. The Trump administration is sending migrants to Panama as part of the administration’s crack down on immigration. To discuss, we FEATURE Lourdes Martinez Diaz Barriga, co-directing attorney at Centro Legal de la Raza. Prior to joining Centro Legal, she spent six years as the Political Director at Mujeres Unidas y Activas in the Bay Area, working alongside immigrant leaders and organizers on campaigns for Domestic Worker and Immigrant Rights, as well as promoting the civic engagement of the Latinx community. Martinez and her team worked successfully with immigration advocates to ensure that immigrant women’s voices were heard by the Biden Administration, and that asylum protections for survivors of domestic violence were restored. She also led MUA’s efforts to form the Alameda County Immigrant Legal and Education Network in collaboration with Centro Legal, in response to the threats launched by the Trump Administration against the immigrant communities of the Bay Area. Givens is a professor of political science at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. She is the author/editor of books and articles on immigration policy, European politics and right-wing politics. Her most recent published books are Radical Empathy: Finding a Path to Bridging Racial Divides and The Roots of Racism: The Politics of White Supremacy in the US and Europe. She was the founding director at the Center for European Studies at the University of Texas and led the university’s efforts in Mexico and Latin America as Vice Provost for International Activities as well as curriculum development. February is Black History Month. To commemorate the last couple days, we FEATURE Leah Wright Rigueur. Rigueur is an author, historian, speaker, and SNF Agora Institute associate professor of history at the Johns Hopkins University. She is an expert in race and politics, US political and social history, African American politics and history, and riots and American backlash, and holds a Ph.D. in History from Princeton University. She is author of The Loneliness of the Black Republican: Pragmatic Politics and the Pursuit of Power, a book that offers a much-needed critical examination of the tense relationship that exists between African Americans and the GOP. Providing a thorough reading of black voting behavior and opinion over a 60-year period, Rigueur’s book also analyzes the ideas and actions of black activists, politicians, officials, and intellectuals that worked with and within the Republican Party.
