In celebration of Eid Al-Adha, one of two feast festivals celebrated by Muslims, we FEATURE Jamillah Karim, Ph.D. She is an Assistant Professor of Religion at Spelman College. She specializes in Islam and Muslims in the United States (African American, South Asian and Arab), Islamic Feminism, Race and Ethnicity, and Immigration and Transnational Identity. She investigates what it means to negotiate Islamic ideals of community (ummah) against America’s race and class hierarchies.

She is a co-founder and the former National Coordinator of the SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Health Collective, a network founded in 1997 of 80 women of color and allied organizations that work on reproductive justice issues to fulfill a need for a national network that would organize women of color in the reproductive justice movement.

She is the Wolfe Chair in Scientific and Technological Literacy at McGill University. Trained as an anthropologist, she teaches, writes, and researches on the ethics of computer hacking with a focus on open source software and the protest ensemble Anonymous. She reguarly comments on digital activism, surveillance, free speech and censorship on the news.

She serves on the advisory committee of the Nobel Women’s Initiative’s International Campaign to Stop Rape & Gender Violence in Conflict.
