Ta’Niyah Van is a current M.A. candidate at the American University School of Communication studying Media, Technology, and Democracy. Her research falls under a birth justice framework with a focus on Black maternal health and community access. She examines the ways information about community centered care such as doulas, midwives, and free-standing birthing centers is being disseminated to the public. She has presented her research on how the media frames the Black maternal health crisis through storytelling at the National Council for Black Studies. Ta’Niyah has a passion for understanding how community led research can be a powerful tool in reclaiming narratives that do not accurately reflect community experience.
