Tamika Matthews has nearly 20 years of communications knowledge with experience in strategic nonprofit and government communications, print and digital journalism, and technical writing. She is dedicated to highlighting social issues in her work, with an emphasis on disability rights and justice, health disparities, health literacy, anti-violence, anti-racism, and the intersections of marginalized identities.
She currently serves as a communication manager to promote services to audiences through the development, management and troubleshooting of communication and dissemination strategies. Previously, she led content development for persons who inject/use drugs (PWID/PWUD) in coordination with a national HIV campaign, and served as a communications technical assistance expert on a nationwide nutrition campaign.
She has provided expertise on matters of social justice and equity, leading staff development in concepts of transformative leadership, liberation, equity and movement building in social justice work.
In 2024, Tamika earned her Health Union Patient Leader Certification, a program designed in collaboration with the Society of Participatory Medicine, to help foster provider/patient engagement, patient empowerment and education. She also serves as a member of the Colorado Consumer Health Initiative’s Community Advisory Board. The board supports CCHI’s public policy efforts and amplifies the healthcare needs of the state’s most vulnerable and marginalized communities.
Tamika earned her M.S. in health communications from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and her B.S. in technical communications from Arizona State University.
