Susanne Althoff is an associate professor at Emerson College in Boston and the author of LAUNCHING WHILE FEMALE: Smashing the System That Holds Women Entrepreneurs Back (Beacon Press, October 2020). Based on 100+ interviews with women and nonbinary entrepreneurs in the U.S., the book examines entrepreneurship's gender gap, identifies the biggest hurdles faced by these founders, and proposes ways to make the startup space more inclusive and equitable. Althoff has also researched allyship in the business world, role models and mentors for women in business, and the lack of women authors of business books. At Emerson College, Althoff focuses on publishing entrepreneurship, the business of publishing, and women's media. She's served as an advisor for startups founded by female students.
Before she became a professor in 2015, Althoff had a two-decade career as a magazine editor. Her last post was editor-in-chief of The Boston Globe Magazine. Althoff holds a master of science degree in journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. She's undergone extensive media training and has made TV, radio, print, digital, and podcast appearances (such as on WBUR, WFXT Boston 25, and The Boston Globe).
