Suman Sorg, FAIA

Suman Sorg is the founding principal and chief designer of Sorg Architects located in Washington, DC and New Delhi, India. She is an expert in architecture, building design, urban developments, and historic preservation and renovations.

Established in 1986, the Sorg Architects’ extensive international portfolio includes multi-family residential, commercial, educational, institutional and civic projects. In a given year, Sorg Architects has completed design for up to $1 billion in construction value and has projects under design with individual construction costs over $400 million. With a focus on excellence in design for public buildings, Sorg Architects has designed more than 8 US Embassies abroad and a myriad of federal and municipal project throughout the Washington DC region and country. Suman’s recently published book, titled Modern in Context, explores her design philosophy which strives for simplicity, clarity of design, and for an integrated approach to preserving and protecting the environment.

Suman Sorg’s work has been recognized with numerous honors, including 26 awards from the American Institute of Architects. She has lectured extensively for the AIA, the National Building Museum, the Urban Land Institute, the Center for Architecture in New York, and others. Suman Sorg is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, serves on the Board of Trustees for the National Building Museum, and she is a Peer Reviewer for the General Services Administration Design Excellence Program. Suman began her studies at the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi, India and completed her Bachelor of Architecture at Howard University in Washington, DC. She went on to study Design and Historic Preservation at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

Suman began her studies in architecture at the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi, India, and completed graduate work in Historic Preservation at Cornell University. Suman served as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Ivory Coast prior to settling in Washington and starting her firm.
