Bio

Maurya Glaude is a professor of the practice, researcher, and clinical social worker, licensed in Louisiana and Texas. She educates and prepares graduate students for clinical-community social work practice using innovative, trauma-informed, and evidence-based teaching methods. Maurya’s research interests include adolescent development; health disparities; culturally relevant practice models and continuing care services for adolescents experiencing mental illness and substance use disorders. Maurya is currently the primary investigator on The Power of Language: A Community-Based Trauma Informed Children’s Experiential Learning Program and Let’s Get Focused! PrEping Ethnic and Racial Minority Principal Investigator Women for Improved Sexual Health. She recently participated in a NIH/NIDA-funded longitudinal study on continuing care for adolescents in recovery (2014-2017) and the evaluation of a U.S. OAH HIV/STI prevention among adolescents (2013-2016).

Maurya is a SAMHSA CSWE MFP Doctoral Fellow alum. The doctoral fellowship allowed her to complete a dissertation and demonstrate her commitment to providing direct services in behavioral health and substance use disorders. In fact, Maurya has provided more than 15 years of direct practice with minority and diverse populations by providing individual, couple’s and family treatment, facilitating adolescent support groups, developing workshop curricula for community and school-based presentations, and facilitating Phase I Drug Court groups. Additionally, her behavioral health expertise was instrumental in the development of the DHHS/OAH behavioral health program for a rural Louisiana school-based wellness center (2010-2011).

As an executive director of a Community Action Agency, she managed an operating budget of $1.3 million; directed daily operations of 14 state, federal and locally funded social service programs, and coordinated evacuation and sheltering of 1000+ displaced hurricane evacuees. Maurya has strong ties to the diverse communities of Houston and New Orleans and because she has worked in many capacities and locales in these regions, she utilizes her background, skills, and experience to empower communities through her work and volunteerism. With significant research and behavioral practice experience, Maurya has bridged research with frontline social work practice in order to improve and standardize care.

Glaude’s written works appear in various scholarly peer-reviewed journals as well as USA Today and MIC.

Maurya Glaude holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Houston, Master of Social Work from Tulane University, and Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) from Texas Southern University.
