Mary Boyle is Common Cause’s vice president for communications. As a member of Common Cause’s senior leadership and strategic planning team, Mary works with the organization’s full staff to develop comprehensive communication strategies and work plans for issue campaigns, including media outreach, online communications and engagement, coalition management, online and direct mail fundraising and web presence.

Mary is a primary spokesperson for Common Cause, and leads a communications team that handles a wide range of external and internal activities, including: national and state press outreach to generate coverage of Common Cause’s legal, research and advocacy work that results in hundreds of news stories a year; strategizes and executes communications and engagement plans to reach Common Cause’s 400,000-plus members and supporters, both online and offline; strengthens the organization’s vibrant social media platforms that collectively reach nearly 8 million people; as well as oversees the organization’s direct mail program.

Mary has led Common Cause’s media work around its major campaigns of recent years, including highlighting ethics breaches at the US Supreme Court, exposing the American Legislative Exchange Council and the organization’s longtime fight to reduce the influence of big money in politics and fight back against the Citizens United Supreme Court decision.

Mary is quoted routinely in newspapers ranging from The New York Times, Washington Post and Los Angeles Times, to regional newspapers and blogs. She has also done numerous television interviews on network and cable television.

Before joining the Common Cause staff in 2002, Mary covered politics and public policy for the Denver and Washington bureaus of The Gazette of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and was a general assignment reporter for The Associated Press in Baltimore and Denver. She started her journalism career as a staff writer for The Sun of Lowell, Massachusetts.

Mary has a bachelor’s degree in English from Holy Cross College and a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University.
