Bio

Dorothy M. Bland is the dean of the Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism at the University of North Texas. She has more than 25 years of media experience including being a reporter, editor, media/marketing consultant and publisher.

In the UNT Student Choice Awards, she was voted the “Best Dean” at UNT in 2018. Under her leadership, the Mayborn earned the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Equity and Diversity Award in 2016.

Prior to becoming a dean, she served for five years as the journalism division director at Florida A&M University. As a professor, she has taught a variety of classes including the Use of Information Resources, Language Skills for Media Professionals, Media Ethics, Mass Media Methods plus Reporting & Writing I. Bland has served on 10 ACEJMC site teams for accreditation. Her work has been published in publications ranging from USA Today to The International Journal of the Image. She earned three Gannett president’s rings for excellence as a publisher. Prior to joining Gannett in 1980, she worked for daily newspapers in Arkansas and Tennessee.

Bland earned her MBA from George Washington University and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Arkansas State University. She has completed additional graduate courses in mass communication at Florida State University. Bland is featured in the book "The Edge of Change: Women in the 21st Century Press.” She has made presentations at institutions ranging from The Poynter Institute to Kuwait University. She is active in a variety of organizations ranging from AEJMC to the National Association of Black Journalists. Her research interests include media management, marketing, digital/social media and diversity.
