Bio

Caryn D. Riswold is a feminist theologian in the Lutheran tradition. She is Professor of Religion and serves as the Mike and Marge McCoy Family Distinguished Chair in Lutheran Heritage and Mission at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. In 2012 she was one of 20 faith leaders participating in the Faith and Reproductive Justice Leadership Institute at The Center for American Progress in Washington, D.C., and has served in leadership roles with the Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education as well as the Lilly Fellows Program in Humanities and the Arts. She speaks regularly around the country to public, academic, and religious audiences on topics related to feminism, Christian theology, politics, women, higher education, and social justice. Caryn’s writing has appeared in academic journals (Political Theology, Dialog), church magazines (The Lutheran), online venues (Feministing, RhRealityCheck, Patheos), local newspapers (State Journal Register, Jacksonville Journal-Courier), and she writes regularly at feminismxianity, a blog on Medium.com. She is the author of three books, the most recent of which is Feminism and Christianity (2009). Caryn earned her Ph.D. and Th.M. from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, holds a master’s degree from the Claremont School of Theology, and received her B.A. from Augustana College in her childhood hometown of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
