Carolyn Murnick is the author of the investigative true crime memoir THE HOT ONE (Simon & Schuster, 2017), recommended by NPR, Elle, Entertainment Weekly, and named a best book of the year by The New York Post. She is a media commentator on women and true crime, and her TEDx talk "How Crime Shows Undermine Your Empathy" explores "the beautiful dead girl" phenomenon and what we lose when we consume crime as entertainment. She has appeared on numerous outlets including CBS 48 Hours, The Dr. Oz show, and NPR's Weekend Edition.
Sub-speciality:
I speak at the intersection of women and crime, with a specialty in critiquing crime journalism and crime programming on film and television from a feminist perspective. My memoir, The Hot One, explores my search for answers surrounding my childhood best friend's murder, so I speak not only as a journalist but from personal experience as a friend of the victim at the center of a case that received widespread media attention, much of it sensationalized and erroneous.
