Aletha Maybank, MD, MPH

Dr. Aletha Maybank is a young, highly respected physician on a mission. Currently, she is Chief Health Equity Officer and Vice President at the American Medical Association (AMA).

Previously, she was an Assistant Commissioner at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Dr. Maybank is also a Founding Board Member of the Artemis Medical Society, an organization created in 2012 to support and nurture women physicians of color worldwide with a current engagement of over 3500 women. Her areas of expertise include preventive medicine, health injustice and inequities, food and fitness, maternal and child health, cancer, HIV/AIDS, and community health. She is pediatrician board certified in preventive medicine/public health.

Dr. Maybank has been a medical expert on MSNBC's Melissa Harris-Perry Show, Disney Jr.'s DocMcStuffins, WBLS Daily Dose, Good Morning America, WABC Here and Now, BET-106 & Park, HuffPost Live, FOX 5 Good Day Street Talk, and Our World with Black Enterprise. She is a weekly Medical Contributor on Arise America News on ARISE TV, a global news channel anchored in Johannesburg, London, and New York. She currently has her own column, The Doctor’s In on BKReader.com and has also had her own column Doctor’s Orders on Ebony.com.

She has participated on several film projects: The Deadliest Disease in America by Crystal Emery, Soul Food Junkies by Byron Hurt, and The Tale of Timmy Two Chins by Luis Hernandez. She has also awards from entities such as The Network Journal 40 Under 40, JET Magazine as a Champion on Public Health, HelloBeautiful.com as 25 Women You Need to Know in 2014, and the Hip Hop Loves Foundation.

In keeping with her humanitarian vision, Dr. Maybank served on two medical mission trips to Haiti in 2010; assisting with the post-earthquake relief efforts and provided direct care to survivors.

Dr. Maybank holds a BA from Johns Hopkins University, a MD from Temple University School of Medicine, and a MPH from Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.
