I find really interesting the issues Maxine is commenting.
She seems to be very up to date both in gender problems as in politics.
Great article!!

Re: Latoya Peterson's article on 'Not Rape', I wish to contribute a poem I wrote in 1979:
THE PSYCHOLOGICAL CONDITIONING OF WOMEN OR WHAT HAVE WE GOT TO LOSE BUT OURSELVES/“Why did it happen?” we asked ourselves. “When and where did it begin?” We asked ourselves as we awoke from the sickly sweet nightmare of being “feminine.”/Instead of the superkalifragilistikexpialodotious experience we were expecting, we felt fear, shame, humiliation, helplessness, alienation and dissociation from our bodies./All these had penetrated the illusions of romance and security. We wept with sorrow for our lost and unknown selves./ We had a case in Canada recently where a 12-year-old girl was in relationship with an older man who said it was a 'consensual' relationship. Thankfully, the judge didn't agree and charged him.

I wish to thank Latoya Peterson for her article on 'Not Rape' and the consequences of keeping silent. I was involved in the Women's Movement of the 1970s. It breaks my heart to see and hear that women continue to be abused sexually, often with little recourse. It is clear the double standard for men and women continues to exist today. Bill Clinton is still seen as a credible power figure after his misadventures as President. If Hilary Clinton had been the one performing sexual acts, she would have been labelled a slut or worse. Women and girls continue to be seen as sexual objects to be used (and abused) at will.

Gloria, I disagree that ALL the women's groups have cut the President too much slack re the healthcare "reform" legislation. The National Organization for Women [NOW] has repeatedly posted, issued press releases, and otherwise notified anyone who is paying attention that this legislation is unacceptable if/when it carries any Stupak-like amendments or side deals for future restrictions. Some of us, including NOW President Terry O'Neill, have been speaking and demonstrating against the proposed coverage restrictions, as well as against the lack of regulation of the healthcare industry. It seems that the deals have been made by the President and some Congresspersons to expand coverage without any real efforts or mechanisms in place to keep costs down. And under the current legislation the insurance companies will continue to charge women more than men for the same coverage.

Women should not be supporting the current bill and the deals which will merely take more federal deficit dollars to pay the current bloated healthcare industry. We need TRUE REFORM! Not huge bonuses for middle managers who are paid to deny coverage. Reform will not happen as long as single-payer insurance is taken off the table prior to any "negotiations". A bad healthcare bill is worse than no bill at all.

This is a superb reflection on where the American press is, where it has been and where it might be heading. I agree with your assessment; news about women and produced by women has never been given its due.

In standard mass communications history texts, the first mention of female journalists is often in passing or - as author Marian Beadsley puts it - in "the footnotes." One wonders how many stories never were told because they were considered too "chiffon." Our error, of course, was compounded by our failure to understand the true stories from people around the globe, often with tragic consequences.

I look forward to the inclusion of voice in our press. May the collaborative spirit of inquiry and inclusion inform our futures.
