Many Thanks, From Carol Jenkins

In January of 2005 I was called to a meeting in Gloria Steinem’s living room. Gloria, Jane Fonda and Robin Morgan were gathered there with some of the leading feminists and women in media in the country. We left that day committed to creating an organization that would fight sexism in the media–and I was [...]

WMC Tribute, Jehmu in the News, Vote for Courtney Martin

Thanks to all of our supporters who turned out on Monday, November 2 for the passing of the baton at a reception for me as I prepare to move on to other projects (although none could be as wonderful as the WMC!). I got to introduce Jehmu Greene, our incoming president. WMC Co-founder Gloria Steinem [...]

Introducing Jehmu Greene, the WMC’s New President!

It is with great pleasure that we announce that Jehmu Greene has been selected as the next president of The Women’s Media Center. We’ve attached a copy of the press release so you’ll be aware of the news!
Jehmu brings great expertise in feminist/progressive organizing and media-and she is, we believe, the perfect woman for the [...]

The Shriver Report, A Demand to End Afghanistan War, Letterman & the Workplace

A major media analysis of the status of women, The Shriver Report:A Woman’s Nation Changes Everything,  is underway. Spearheaded by Maria Shriver, with powerhouse partners the non-profit The Center for American Progress, The Rockefeller Foundation, NBC News and Time Magazine, the basis of the project is a nearly 500 page report and national poll on [...]

Polanski, Clinton, Climate Change & Diversity at the FCC

We end the week dealing with a surprise media event — late night host David Letterman revealing on his show, to laughter from the confused audience, an extortion plot against him. Letterman admitted having sex with female staffers. As that story develops, we are in the thick of considering the fate of a well-known director.

From the Founders of the WMC: Jane Fonda, Robin Morgan and Gloria Steinem

We founded The Women’s Media Center (WMC) in 2005 ignited by the dismal media coverage of the 2004 election and the lack of representation of women’s voices and perspectives.  Sadly, even in 2009 there is still much to do, and we need your financial support now more than ever for us to continue the fight [...]

Girls Investigate: Our Views On Media

Diane Sawyer Gets an Anchor Chair, Kristof & WuDunn on Women, Jane Fonda in Santa Fe & Dallas

Welcome back — here’s hoping your Labor Day holiday was regenerative. It seems the months ahead will be full.
The big news of last week, and perhaps for several months to come, was the surprise retirement of Charlie Gibson at ABC News — and the appointment of Diane Sawyer as anchor of World News. I’ll confess, [...]

Diane Sawyer to Anchor ABC World News Desk

The Women’s Media Center (WMC) considers the appointment of Diane Sawyer as anchor of ABC’s World News a watershed moment in the presence of women in media. It means that two of three of the major network anchors are women. Sawyer joins Katie Couric at CBS News in delivering crucially important information to our country [...]

To the WMC Family: Transition News

I have some exciting transition news for you. As you may know, in 2005, Jane Fonda, Robin Morgan and Gloria Steinem founded the WMC and asked me to join them in establishing an organization that would fight sexism in the media. In this short time we have created one of the most powerful, effective media [...]
