Today a coalition of over 40 advocacy groups – comprised of more than 500 individuals from 30 states – converges on D.C. to lobby Congress for health care reform that won’t sacrifice reproductive freedom. Although President Obama has repeatedly guaranteed that citizens will not lose any current benefits in health care overhaul, the Stupak Amendment – passed by the House in early November – would do just that, depriving millions of women of private coverage for abortion services and prohibiting millions more from buying it — even with their own money.

Today’s lobbying is made more urgent with news that Senators Ben Nelson (D-NE) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) plan to introduce an amendment to the Senate nearly identical to Stupak. If anti-abortion language passes in both the Senate and House, the state of reproductive freedom after health care reform may be dire, or nonexistent.
