Storied editor Sandra Guzman is suing her former employer, The New York Post, over their racist and sexist practices, which she believes led to her firing. Guzman’s suit alleges that she was let go after denouncing the infamous Obama /chimpanzee cartoon and goes on to describe a newspaper that was “a hostile work environment where female employees and employees of color have been subjected to pervasive and systemic discrimination and/or unlawful harassment based on their gender, race, color and/or national origin.”
An African American and Puerto Rican, and the only female editor of color at the Post, Guzman’s suit depicts the paper as a despicable place, where editorial and personal conduct were frequently abusive, racist and sexist.
In response, The Post has issued a flat denial, claiming “This lawsuit has no merit and is based on charges that are groundless…Ms. Guzman’s position was eliminated when the section she edited was discontinued due to a decline in advertising sales.”
The Post is one of conservative media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s most highly prized media possessions. What was initially a New York tabloid is now “read by people all over the world,” as Guzman notes in her suit. The WMC commends her for speaking out, and trusts that her case will magnify awareness of workplace sexism and racism – all over the world.
