Rihanna – Examining Media Coverage of Domestic Violence

The emerging domestic violence situation concerning recording artist Chris Brown has stirred up a lot of talk this weekend about the coverage and impact of DV cases in the press.  In particular, the LA Times has been criticized for its decision to identify Rihanna as the alleged assault victim, begging the question of the newspaper’s responsibility to protect the privacy of women and men who experience domestic violence.  Feministing goes further to question the way that the press will potentially position Rihanna as a “posterchild” for domestic violence, the tendency in mainstream media to victimize women in general,  and the significance this incident has for youth, particularly youth of color, and the perpetuation of domestic violence in their relationships.

All incidents of Domestiv Violence, whether of a celebrity or average life nature are to be outlawed…..to be examined as part of the ‘ongoing war against woman’, a war that appears to have no end in sight…..if this man (like men every where) is guilty of violence aganst this woman then he must be punished and the message loud and clear is ‘ZERO TOLERANCE OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMAN AND GIRLS’……
